Eiks I am at risk?!

When I read the article below from TheStar Online, especially after reading my blogger friend, Ailian's posting here, I start asking myself..Am I a risk? Eiks..better start watching my diet!

Who is at risk?

AMONG the general population, those who:

·Have Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) symptoms

·Have a parent, brother, or sister (first-degree relative) with T2DM

·Have had heart disease

·Have abnormal blood cholesterol levels (HDL, or "good" cholesterol, level below 0.9mmol/L or triglyceride level above 1.7mmol/L)

·Have high blood pressure (above 140/90mm Hg; on therapy for hypertension)

·Have a clinical condition associated with insulin resistance

·Are overweight (BMI over 23; or waist wider than 80cm for women and 90cm for men)

·Do not exercise regularly (less than three times a week, 20 minutes at a time)

·Are women with polycystic ovarian syndrome

Pregnant women who:

·Have a BMI over 27

·Have delivered a baby weighing 4kg or more (Shone was 4.24 kg when he was born, 15 days earlier from my due ...a scheduled c-section by gynae and specialist at govt. hospital!)

·Have a bad obstetric history and/or current obstetric problems

·Have gestational diabetes mellitus

·Have glucose in their urine at the first prenatal visit

·Are over 25

TAKE ACTION: If you have any of the risk factors above, ask your doctor to screen you immediately. If you do not have any of them, ask your doctor to screen you annually from age 30 and up.

Overweight children and teenagers (over 120% of ideal weight) who have:

·A first- or second-degree relative (aunt, uncle, grandparent, nephew, niece, half-sibling) with T2DM

·A mother who has had gestational diabetes mellitus

·An Indian ethnic background

·Signs of insulin resistance or conditions associated with it

TAKE ACTION: If your child or teen meets any two of the criteria above, make sure he or she is screened for T2DM at least every two years from age 10 onwards, or at the onset of puberty if puberty occurs before then.

Information sourced from the latest edition of the Ministry of Health's T2DM Management Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG).

The CPG is available at moh.gov.my/MohPortal/cpgPublic.jsp and will be officially launched in Putrajaya on August 11. — LEE TSE LING

First shoes for Shone

Last few weekends, I bought a shoes I thought would fit Shone from Tesco(when he is barely learning how to walk) but failed...cannot fit..sigh..I blog about it here . As for Chinese, or at least my mom believe can only let baby wear a shoes after his 1 year old birthday. So since Shone had reached 1 year old then yet haven't really started walking, I still persisted in my shoes-hunting adventure~

Anyhow, it's never easy to buy a shoes for babies/toddler without their presence. Need the owner presence to test it out.

Finally last weekend I managed to find one for him..from Jusco, Anakku brand.

Actually, before this I was looking for those soft sole shoes like Shoos Shoos or Bugalog brand..but their biggest size(24months) does not seems to fits my son's large and chubby feet...and considering the price..he would outgrown him VERY VERY SOON...so..not worth investing in my case otherwise I simply love the quality of their shoes!

Would soon be shopping for a sandal for him as he inherited my easily-sweaty feet!

Cheers!

Swimming adventures

Last two weekends, after Sunway Lagoon trip was cancelled, in the afternoon around 4.45pm, we brought my two kids go swimming at our apartment after their nap.

KY is so excited as it's been sometime since we last took her to swim! Her first swim was when she was 5 months old. Then now and then when the weather is fine and when we happened to be at home, we would bring them to swim.

She is so excited and wanted to learn to swim(without her swimming ring) after watching another jie jie swimming in the pool. She spent like close to an hour in the pool.

It was Shone first swim(at 1 year-old) and I scooped Shone up after like 20 mins in the pool splashing water and went up my unit to shower. After both of us took our shower( and blow my hair even) we went down to pick up the jie jie(DH is with her).

However, KY still refused to come up from the pool, then i brought Shone for a walk at the pool side and fish pond for like 10-15 mins, still...my girl refused to come out from the pool...DH said why not you go up and come down 30minutes later?

As it was rather hot, I wanted to go to the mini market to buy an ice-cream(my fav :P) but realised I forgot to bring any $. Then suddenly I thought why not I go up again to my unit, bring some $ down and buy me some ice-cream and try to TEMPT KY with it. Perhaps that would make her come out from the POOL!

So I went and practically shout and SHOW OFF my ice-cream at poolside :P ( I think I managed to TEMPT not only her but many kids at the kids pool :P..this mommy..must be losing her mind??)...anyway I didn't care...kept calling her..and LICK my ice-cream..Mango Tango(yep the new flavour from Walls..not bad..)

And finally..it works ;) she obediently leave the pool and came after me for ice-cream..hahah..

So folks, this is one of my tricks :P which succeeded.. it works !

MomBloggersPlanet Cutest Baby with TOYS Contest

What is your children favourite toys?

For Shone (DOB: 20 June 2009) his favourite toy would be ball...I think all boys loves toys like cars and balls isn't it :)

As for KY(DOB: 25 July 2006), her current favourite toy(yes she changes her favourite toy pretty fast!) is a life-like size of soft toys(look at the picture above, they are same size as her as if her buddy!!):

When we were a first-time parent, my husband and I were more crazy about getting toys for KY than she is. However, we found out that most of the time, KY is only interested to play with the price tag card or the toy boxes rather than the toys itself!

Nevertheless we find that the usage of TOYS in early childhood learning plays a part in nurturing their creativity, motor skills and it is what is essential to kids besides, eating, sleeping and poo-ing :P. Playing is very important to a child. And toys plays a big part of it.

Here in the picture(above), KY is stacking the cube to build as if a castle like home for the bee? haha..or was it a beehive after reading her yet another toy, "Right At Home" clothbook which has an activity whereby they can place each animals(bee, horse, fish etc) into their own(right) home! Very nice toy indeed which I personally loved! I often asked KY to put all animals back home to go to bed together with her as part of her bedtime routine or when she refused to sleep. :P Another trick of mine!

However, I feel that toys does not restrict to those pricey and of course specially-designed branded ones...toys which can be found around the house(and safe one of course) can be used to nurture their creativity as well.

Just like these two pictures, the toy that KY is playing and having so much fun is nothing but clothes peg, but she and her cousin, Zoey(DOB:27 Sep 2007) can spend so much time assembling and wearing them, playing pretend games as if they are the princesses for the day! How fun is that!

And toys to us, is life-saver in a sense, especially during travelling. We cannot do without toys in the car, like what Shone is having right now(picture on the left) is a simple plastic hammer toy(which cost only RM2 at Tesco), this toy can keep him entertained while we drive back to my in-law's place or when we went home to visit my parents.

Oh yes, before I finished my story about toys...like to share with you all some good news!
